Change It Up!

July 31, 2024

Gallery One is pleased to announce their new show, “Change it Up,” which is open to the public July 31 through August 27, 2024.

Let’s face it everyone likes staying in his or her comfort zone, that’s why they call it “comfort” zone.  But change is inevitable, and embracing it often offers pleasant surprises, learning moments, and opportunities.  This month the artists of Gallery One are “Changing it Up,” whether it be a new technique, subject matter or philosophy.  A good example is Rina Thaler’s painting, “Change is in the Air,” exploring the changing perceptions of reality we face as we go through life.  Incorporating hand painted papers collaged into a watercolor background shifts the planes of consciousness, turning a simple study of birch trees into a metaphor for natural, but sometimes difficult changes we face in our lives.

For artist Laurie Fields in her piece, “3 Panel Assemblage,” Cindy Beyer in her acrylic painting, “Lumi Jelly,” and Dale Sheldon in her acrylic, “Late Afternoon”, a change of materials brought new inspiration.  “I really mixed it up this month,” says Beyer, I used a black canvas painted with interference paint.  I decided to paint a luminous jellyfish with glowing iridescent paint.  When the light is shining on this painting he is magnificent ethereal!

Artists Jeanne Mueller and Ed Lewandowski changed up their usual “style” of working.  In Jeanne’s painting, “Butterflies are Free,” the artist took a dive into abstraction, while Ed went in a more figurative representational style with his oil painting, “Whiskey Sour”  “I primarily paint landscapes and enjoy working en plein air.  For this challenge, I moved the subject matter indoors while also adding figures.  I was trying to capture the feeling of an old Parisienne bar  late in the evening.”

For artist, Laura Hickman in her pastel, “Lily Sofia” and Joyce Condry in her acrylic “Sunflower Phobia,”  the choice of subject matter enabled them to stretch their usual boundaries.  To change things up Laura, known for her colorful landscapes, drew a monochromatic pastel of a figure, who happens to be her grandmother.  While Joyce chose sunflowers, “they are so big, so yellow, so “in your face” that they actually intimidate me. Painting them was a therapy session for me!”

Artist, Lesley McCaskill’s acrylic, “On the Road Again”, illustrates a change in lifestyle for Lesley herself. “This idea came to me as I was driving over the Indian River Bridge.  The beauty of the landscape with the bay, beach, grasses and the soaring gulls surrounding me. Next to me a mature couple in their sporty car filled with exuberance, juxtaposed with the iconic black pickup filled with young people, all enjoying the sea and the sun. This is my life now!  It sure has changed from city life!”

Cheryl Wisbrock’s acrylic painting, “White Oak Playtime” is a reworking of a previous piece.  “It was a portrait of a large regal oak tree that had been carefully preserved and marked with a sign honoring its history.  I decided the image was a little stuffy, and that the tree deserved a little fun.  I changed its personality from a mature, stately tree to one that hosts neighborhood children who may want to climb or play on it.
