MEET Marybeth

Marybeth Paterson

“Painting from nature is not copying the object, it is realizing one’s sensations”.

– Paul Cézanne

Catching light, seeing color, and responding to the landscape – they all influence my approach to capturing a moment on canvas.  I’m a plein air painter, primarily enjoying the challenges of our beautiful scenes here along the Delmarva coastline.  I try to bring intuitive brushwork and my palette knife to my work, expressing something special about scenes that appeal to me – a few lemons or a fun day at the beach.

I have been fortunate to study with noted landscape artist, Walt Bartman, John Francis Murray, Gonzales Ruiz, Maggie Siner and Stan Sperlak.  Currently, if I’m not painting in and around Lewes on my own, I meet regularly with a group in Lewes, and in the summer I paint with a dynamic group across the bay at spots on the Jersey shore.

Before painting full time, I worked in state and federal government, interior design, and had a free-lance floral design business.  In the past I was on the board of The Friends of the Yellow Barn, and currently am a member of the Friends of the Yellow Barn, Rehoboth Art League, and Lewes Cape Artists Gallery.
