MEET Raymond

Gallery One mourns the loss of our beloved partner, Raymond Ewing, who passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023.

Ray joined Gallery One in January 2020, and quickly became an invaluable participant in every aspect. We learned very early what a treasure he was to all of us and our community of patrons. Ray grew up in the scenic mountains of western Maryland and brought all of his surroundings into his portfolio of work. He was active in the regional and national en plein art movement, garnering many awards. Ray was a beloved art instructor, highly respected juror and guest lecturer in the Washington, DC, and local areas for over 30 years. Before joining Gallery One, and continuing while he was a partner, Ray was featured in solo and group shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as well as New England. He participated in the Department of State Art In Embassies Program and his work is included in private and corporate collections in the US and abroad.

He was an active member in our gallery, creating beautiful work every month to the delight of many of our loyal patrons, offering demonstrations to clients and participating in off-site Gallery painting events, as well as helping with daily operations. This past spring, Ray lovingly restored the mural created for the gallery’s façade by another local artist who has since retired. Gallery One was honored to host Ray and the original artist at a reception attended by many in our art community.

Ray was a giving artist, he loved to talk and was always willing to share his process and his formulas for the amazing colors he produced for his breathtaking work that recorded those fleeting scenes — moments in time when light and color and atmosphere are at their peak. Numerous artists sought him out for critiques, feedback and guidance and he was always willing to share his experience.

Gallery One will miss these talks, his work, his kindness, and the wonderful gentleman he was to each and every person.
