Our Towns
February 26 - March 31, 2020

Gallery One
32 Atlantic Avenue
Ocean View, Delaware 19970

The gallery’s March exhibit, “Our Towns” is being held from February 26 - March 31. Lewes, Rehoboth, Bethany, and Millville share the spotlight in this month’s theme. Our local artists hail from multiple towns in our rural regions, as well as the beach. This month’s paintings reflect that locale, capturing both the beauty of the area and efforts to preserve vanishing landscapes.

Artist Jan Moffatt does this in her acrylic painting “Millville Chicken Houses.” Jan drives by these chicken houses, old farm buildings, and cornfields almost every day, and gets a glimpse of the old days, knowing one day soon they will not be there. These chicken houses on the old Evans Farm at Railway and Old Mill Road really speak to the early chicken farms that led to the big Delaware chicken industry of today.

Laura Hickman’s pastel painting, “Winter Morning, Bethany Beach,” This new pastel shows the sun quietly rising from the ocean over the boardwalk at Garfield Parkway. Winter in our beach towns brings beautiful light and far fewer people. It captures a view that our summer visitors don’t get to appreciate.

Lesley McCaskill’s watercolor painting, “Moored by the Canal,” was painted entirely on site. The boat belongs to the University of Delaware and is used to study the biology and health of our coastal community. This large research vessel has become a part of the marsh, water, sky and the history of our coast. The beauty of the day and scene just had to be painted and really illustrates Lewes.

Marybeth Paterson’s oil painting, “Lewes Canal” reflects the fact that sailboats are quintessential to Lewes in the summertime. Sailboats are classic Lewes, but also a timeless favorite because of the organic shapes of their sails, the reflection of light on water, and the strong verticals of their masts as an interesting contrast to the horizontals of the horizon, the ocean and the wetlands and fields in “our town” and the surrounding area. A true symbol of summer.

Dale Sheldon’s acrylic painting “Surf Avenue” is a scene from Rehoboth Beach. Surf Avenue is at the north end of the mile-long boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, and runs along the ocean, with pine trees and sand lining the road. Glimpses of the ocean peek through the trees and the sounds of the waves can be heard. Dale’s painting is like a tiny slice of summer life.

We hope you’ll come out and enjoy a quick trip around our beautiful local area provided by Gallery One’s local artists – we’re sure you’ll find “your town” represented.

Gallery One is open 7 days a week, 10-5. The Gallery is always staffed by an artist.
