September 2019 Exhibit - The Sky’s the Limit
August 28 - October 1, 2019

Gallery One
32 Atlantic Avenue
Ocean View, Delaware 19970

This month’s theme at Gallery One has a sky-high limit! The title of this month’s theme has as its origin a poker metaphor originating in the 1900’s. Yes, sky high stakes poker is the original source for this expression. In keeping with that “no holds barred” idea the artists at Gallery One explored everything from landscapes with wildflowers and amusement parks to pigs! Most of this month’s artist incorporated the glorious summer sky that we get here along the coast into their artwork, but one who didn’t was artist Laura Hickman. Laura’s pastel painting, “Top Hog,” features a portrait of a barnyard favorite with the title incorporating the theme: “I’m telling’ ya, honey…when you’re top dog in the pig sty…the sky’s the limit baby!!” Laura’s painting is delightful and shows that there are no limits in how Gallery One’s artists approach their monthly themes.

Six of the Gallery artists explored the sky as the literal limit this month. In Dale Sheldon’s acrylic painting, “First Light,” she brings the dawn over the beach to life on canvas. As Dale describes her scene, “When the sky first lights up at dawn it is somewhat unpredictable. Clouds on the horizon mean the colors might be spectacular, as this sunrise surely was! Quiet neutrals in the foreground lead to the colors that additionally light up the water, creating more color and movement”. In “Great Sky with Orange Marsh,” artist Michelle Marshall’s acrylic painting done in vibrant, sun drenched hues, dramatically explores the transition between where marsh meets sky. In artist Marybeth Paterson’s oil painting, “Cotton Candy Clouds,” done in crisp almost graphic blues with a bit of warm sand to provide contrast, the clouds dominate, drawing the eye skyward! In “Windblown,” artist Cheryl Wisbrock’s painting we are transported to a bright day at the beach with the breathtaking sky above, as the clouds are gloriously whipped by strong breezes over our heads. Artist Jan Moffatt’s acrylic painting, “Wildflowers,” grabs the viewer’s attention with bright colors and texture in the front and then draws us into the painting to a quiet peaceful place beneath the towering sky.

Lesley McCaskill’s acrylic painting, “Love the View,” takes us to the limits on a Ferris wheel. Combining the summer landscape of an amusement park with the characteristic local marsh landscape Lesley’s painting does not limit itself to one or the other. Done largely in plein air Lesley describes the scene while painting near the Jolly Roger amusement park in Ocean City, “I was captivated by the view and the juxtaposition of the roller coaster and Ferris wheel that was elevated near this quiet oasis of pond and wildlife marsh. Painting a small study there, I enjoyed the muffled sound of the coaster and the sounds of summer park goers while I was immersed in the quiet stillness of nature.

Pat Riordan’s watercolor painting, “Up, Up and Away!” features the view from colorful hot air balloons over a marsh scene with wildlife. It doesn’t get any more sky high than that!

We hope you’ll come see this month’s artwork at Gallery One and remember: “As the sun knows, even the sky isn’t really the limit”!

Gallery One is open 7 days a week, 10-5. The Gallery is always staffed by an artist.
